just an ordinary day...

Woke up in the morning to the sunlight filtering in through the fog outside my paned-glass window. Woke up in time to wish Mom's girlfriend a safe day at court and passed out again but for a few more minutes, before sleep resistance and necessary calls forces me out of repose. Just an ordinary day.

Made calls that were not received, checked email, drank cupfuls of cupfuls of mountain cold water. Soaked beans to return the moisture and reduce the cooking time in them, before all the nutrients are destroyed by the heat. Just an ordinary day.

Took off at 10:45 in Ed's car. Paid $52 for a two-hour lesson and sped off to Daly City. Drove on the freeway for the first time, to San Mateo and back. Made more graceful my turns. Earned a "good job" from him and agreed to meet again in June, when school has released me from its quarters. Just an ordinary day.

Called up Mr. Ray Reeves and agreed to send a résumé, providing him with my background, why I am qualified to work at his environmental firm. Explained to him that I could spare five weeks - just five weeks - to come down to Mississippi and work there this summer. Prepared myself with a barrage of questions about the firm, what it does in its laboratory, answering questions about the oil content in the soils and waters found in the areas swept by Katrina. Never asked any of them for the nervousness that seizes me when I first hear his voice. Laughed when he asked me the origins of my accent. Fell in love with his voice - that soft yet authoritative Mississippi drawl, "always a pleasure!". Just an ordinary day.

Skipped house and hotfooted it to the bank. Deposited several checks not yet outdated. Stepped in the door of the chiropractic office of Dr. Rennie O'Brien. It takes him a second to recognize me for the glare coming in from outside. When he does, the reunion is brief - but longer than any I've had thus far.-

Forgot to mention. Stopped by my old elementary school, Synergy. Said hello to numerous teachers - Tammy, Elena, Joan, Sandy, Sarah, Jesse, Larry, Rita, Judy, Deirdre - all of whom wanted to know how Mom is doing. Answered them all, and said, many times, that I attend UC Santa Cruz, pursuing a combined major of Environmental Studies and Earth Sciences. Accepted and gave hugs. Hung out with a friend now a high school frosh, whom I'm sure was hitting on me, and talked about martial arts. Amazed at how grown up he has continued to become. Told alum Daschell about my massage-therapist's beliefs about Jesus: "He came to show us his message of love, and when we did not listen, he came back as Hitler to show us what happens with hate." Profoundly struck with the energy of youth. Listened to a class read "Twelfth Night". Just an ordinary day.

-Chiropractory. Got adjusted. Knowing, from Rennie's expression, that the "youthful crack" of my spine has pleased him mightily. Am impressed at his dexterity and flexibility (he is 50-something - still young). Promised to deliver his message to my mother. Advised I would rest well and easy (("melt")) tonight. Made $10 copayment and left feeling "light on my feet". Just an ordinary day.

Stopped on the way to KE's place to see Hadas and Yonnas. Remarked on the fickle weather that seems to be ubiquitous on the NorCal coast. Described my way of keeping the boys in line ((when they get rowdy with my godmother)) and charging them laundry money for every dirty word that leaves their mouths. Left for KE's place. Just an ordinary day.

Saw KE and put up with her maudlin manners around my eating habits. Told her how proud of her I feel and that is it most important that she be proud of herself. Talked about her drive for happiness. Realized profound connections between her and my mother, my mother and me. Commented: "Whenever anyone in our family meets up after not seeing each other for a while, it's just like we pick up where we left off. And is it lucky that we have these relationships with each other? Yes ...but we make our own luck. We choose to make these relationships with each other." Told her about V for Vendetta. Found replacement shoes to wear to Salsa class. Just an ordinary day.

Arrived at Salsa class in a gust of drizzle at 8:15p. Greeted everyone warmly and proceeded to make an @$$ of myself in spinning off-balance. Noticed that everyone else were making @$$3$ of themselves, too, and rapidly improved from encouragement and advice. Had a great time dancing amongst friends and spinning around joyously. Left with kind words from Rodolfo and Ava. Just an ordinary day.

Arrive home and made two quesadillas with jalapeños. Told my mother all of what had happened today and announced that I would have my license by the end of June. Told her about our similarities. Shared my love with her and lay down to rest easy with the Dragon, my beloved mother. Watching her type while I type. Soon to have many profound dreams, indeed.

Just an ordinary day.
